Oil leak back between head & firewall 200 1985

The leak is a pulsing type from somewhere between the head and firewall and sprays against the firewall. Started suddenly and pumped between a quart or two in a few minutes.
The flame trap was not clogged.
I've been around Volvos for thirty years but this one is a puzzle! So it goes to the indie shop this week.
Any ideas guys?
