brake rotors 200 1986

ok, so I got a pair of vented brembo rotors for my '86 240. It does have solid rotors currently, but when i replaced the calipers this summer, I did it with vented calipers, or so i was told that when i got them. When i tried to put the rotors on today, they don't quite fit. It doesn't seem to be that they are too thick, but that they are too wide in diameter. Can i have them machined down around the perimeter and will they still work fine? or do I just have to sell them and find some non-vented ones? I'm quite baffled why they don't fit...but so it goes i guess. any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
