Auto trans. getting rebuilt --- acceptable costs? 200 1982

Okay, so I broke down and decided to get my trans rebuilt instead of replaced. I have an '82 GLE (V6), 100k. So that makes the trans a BW-55, a 3spd auto. I had my brick towed to a shop recommended to me by VCOA. The woman who I talked to had her BW-55 trans rebuilt there, also. I was told by the mechanic that some of the clutches had sustained so much heat that they were 'kinda welded', and that at some point someone had removed/replaced the auto trans pump and it wasn't re-attached correctly; something wasn't lined up and that may have caused a problem internally. Sound reasonable? I don't know. Any idea about how much a partial/complete rebuild should cost? Transmissions aren't my area.

Thanks a bunch - Chris
