The story of Fuse #13 200

Boy I had fuuuun these last couple days. I was driving along Tuesday, I was about to pull into the parking garage at work when my alternator light came on. I thought, huh, time to replace alternator and/or battery, this'll be fun in the parking garage. Pulled into my parking spot and hit the parking brake, and the car died. I just shook my head. Started looking at it when it was slow at work and noticed that there was no fuel pump hum, and the indicator lights weren't come on on the dash when I turned the key. I looked at the fuse panel and ole' #13 was blown. This fuse is for the fuel pump relay and the turn signal flasher relay. I thought maybe the fuse had just whigged out so I replaced it (wishful thinking). I live right across the street from work, and by the time I got home my alt. light was on again and when I set my parking break the engine died again, sure enough, #13 had blown again. I thought, damn it, a deeper problem. I had had a long day so I just left it till the next day and rode my bike to work. After work Wednesday I started disassembling the damn thing. After some troubleshooting I found that fuse 13 would blow if I left my hazard flashers on for too long, and it would blow immediately if I hit the turn signal to the left. I thought Ah Hah, flasher. So I went after that little flasher, also checked wiring in center console for shorts around hazard light switch (found none). Took the flasher off, and fuse no blow, have no turn signals, but hey, that was definitive enough for me. I tested the flasher relay, and it was leaking, wasn't at zero ohms when it should have been, ran down to O'reily's in the brick with no turn signals (used the left arm, I looked cooooool). Picked up a flasher for $9. Slapped that puppy in in the parking lot and tested the turn signal, all I got was the faithful blinking of left turn indicator, Hallelujah!! I hit my emergency flashers for a while just to check that I wouldn't lose fuel pressure while on the road, and everything held. So I drive back home, you know, cruising with the big boys, turn signals and all, dash partially disassembled, happy as a lark. Today after work I will put the dash back together, and this chapter of my Volvo saga will have come to an end. If anyone actually made it through to the end of this without losing interest I appreciate your patience, and hope that if ole' #13 ever goes on you, you can say knowingly to your passenger, "Oh, just a minute, that was lucky #13, I bet my flasher relay is goin' out." You can change it, or disable it, and feel like a champ, with the cool breeze blowing on your left arm as you signal your turns. Later --Shu
