Oscilating Idle and using oil 700 1989

My 1989 740 turbo has a slightly oacilatig idle which is less pronounced on cold start.In addition, it has recently been using oil. It appears that oil may be leaking from oil cap and down to engine cover on low side. What is likely cause?
