90 740GL, engined stalled during panic stop? 700

Yesterday, my wife had to make a panic stop on the freeway. She was going about 65MPH, and used both feet on the brake pedal. All four tires locked up, but then she said the car started rolling forward again, and she had to stop the rest of the way with the hand brake. The engine stalled, and the pedal went soft. She said the car went from side to side, quite violently, and thank god she did not hit anyone! She also said that it all happened so fast, she is not sure if she changed the steering wheel during the 'tires locked' phase, that could have resulted in the side - then over correction to the other side (she felt the car was going to tip over!).
Ok, so here is my question:
Why would the engine stall from a panic stop? We have about 130K on the car, and completed a major tune up, fuel system cleaning service two months ago. New rear brakes and rotors. Brake fluid flushed. The only thing somewhat different on this car, is it has the IPD VX cam, and it does idle rough, but I have never seen it stall? Appreciate any input on items that I should check.
Thanks,

Note: Besides not hitting anyone, the other good news out of this is my wife now agrees that taking a defensive driving course, for herself and our daughter, is a good idea. I've never been able to convince her that the expenditure was warranted.
