Fuel filter - how to tell when time to replace? 700 1990

1990 740 base sedan

I probably should replace this anyway, but is there a quick way to check when it's time to replace it? My parents owned the car since 97, and then they passed it on to me around 2000. As far as I know, the fuel filter has never been replaced, as least while in our possession. Additionally, the FAQ details how to do it, but how do I tell which fuel filter is what I need? What other parts (seals, washers, etc.) do I need to purchase while doing this?
