Coke(d) head B234F 700

To repeat from previous posts. Got a 1990 740GLE with the B234f DOHC engine, cheap. Had lost a timing belt. with 195K miles.

It looks to me as though the car had been well maintained up unil about a 100k or so. Lots of newer parts, timing belt changed then (from sticker on engine) etc. But since then not so nice PO let it go (change the oil, it's all gone!!)

Anyway, I noticed when taking off head that oil was all over the engine block, tranny, firewall, etc. I've heard about oil leaks in these engines and wasn't surprised. But when the head came off there was literally carbon sheets on the top of the pistons, the cylinder walls, and starting to seep under the head gasket.

My question is this normal?? (for a badly maintained engine, I mean) I can tell that the flame trap vacumn lines were gunked up and this might have been part of the problem. But would it cause this caking up?

Other question, I've cleaned off the carbon deposits, and everything looks to be in great shape, no scoring or chips on piston head, cylinder walls seem smooth to the touch, and I can turn the crank with a 1/2" socket, but not by hand, is this all normal?

THanks,

jc
I've removed the head from the engine,
