Fuel pump check valve 200 1984

How can I tell if the check valve on my external fuel pump is starting to go?

My 1984 245 has been running rough when cold, and the engine dies unless I work the gas pedal for a minute or two before letting it idle. Once I'm on the road and the engine is good and warm, it runs great.

Had to leave it on the roof of a very cold parking garage last night. It turned over for me this morning, but ran for only five very rough seconds. Could NOT get it started for a long time after that.

Could this be the check valve, or is this just a shot in the dark/am I barking up the wrong tree? FWIW, the battery is almost brand new, and I just changed the (Bosch) fuel filter a week ago. I have a new check valve, but don't want to crawl under the car and mess with it unless I have to.
