limp mode with gear changes 900

weird! sometimes car reports limp mode - flashing orange arrow on dash, flashing E&W on gears console (automatic:960) yet changes gear and rev needle dropping down normally with its change while driving along! But car ALSO tries to take off sluggishly in 3rd while reporting limp mode. Any ideas? Could inhibitor be the problem considering gear changes felt driving along highway while orange arrow and gearbox lights flashing??
