Today I began disassembling my B18 which I replaced because it was smoking. I thought that the engine had run fine except for the smoking of course. After taking the head off I found two large gashes on opposites sides of the cylinder in the front/rear direction. These worn gashes are about half an inch wide, a millemeter or 2 deep (maybe more) and they stop about two inches below the top of the cylinder. I will take a picture when I get the block facing right side up again.
How deep of damage is too deep for a rebuild? If I decided to bore out this block to B20 specs, can I use normal B20 head gaskets? Could I put a B20 head on it? The block seems to be a late B18 casting. Any gueses on the cause of damage?
Thanks,
mario
