Coolant Flushing Questions 200 1989

I got the two nuts off for the thermostat. As soon as I got the 2nd one off, coolant came out. I was kinda scared to do anything else, so I put the nuts back on. I now have a couple of questions.

1. If I'm gonna do the flush, should I drain the lower radiator hose and the drain plug on the side of the block?

2. After I flush, how much coolant should I expect to replace? I have one jug of the Volvo coolant. Do I need more

3. And last, what kind of coolant would ya'll reccomend?
