The in-tank pump gave up the ghost. My mechanic, who has usually been conservative in helping me keep the old brick running, tells me I HAVE to replace both the in-tank and the main fuel pumps. He says if the in-tank goes bad it will certainly make the main pump fail too. The car is 17 years old and has 196,000 miles on it.
I drove the car a total of maybe 10 minutes to limp home. I replaced the in-tank and the car now purrs. Is my mechanic shooting straight with me? Do I really need to replace the main pump in addition to the in-tank pump?
