Yesterday I finished the A/C overhaul in the 760T. Today I did A/C maintenance in the 960. After experiences with both cars at local shops outdid Kafka, I did both cars myself. Air temperature at the vents with the engine running at idle is now 32-38 degrees F in the 760T, 38-40 degrees F in the 960. I had a local shop evacuate the new charge of R12 in the 760T. Then, I put all new Volvo parts forward of the firewall (compressor, low and high pressure hoses, high pressure tubing and condenser) plus a new evaporator and a severe duty VOV, with Volvo conversion kits one (receiver, valve, ester oil, rings and quick release low pressure side valve) and two (tube between receiver and evaporator with a neck and connections to install the quick release low pressure side valve). The new light weight aluminum parallel condenser from Volvo has twice as many smaller diameter tubes as the heavy copper unit that was in the car. Otherwise, it is an identical fit. This new condenser has Volvo P/N 1362149, but it is German Behr with P/N 70.362,16.505 (yes, two periods and one comma). Everything fit perfectly, as is the norm with Volvo parts. I am grateful that I was lent a vacuum pump and gauges. BTW, Interdymanics sells an acceptable set of gauges with hoses for $40 at the local Pep Boys. If anybody knows where I can buy cheap a pump that will create a vacuum like a black hole in space, please let me know. After I ran a vacuum forever, I put in Dupont R134. On the 960, I checked low side pressure and added one of those cans from Interdynamcs with R134, ester oil, "Maximum Cool" (lubricant?), sealant and leak detector. I still think it is a good idea to periodically evacuate A/C, flush, change compressor oil, receiver and valve, maybe put in, check or replace as needed and Airsept screen, and recharge. An overhaul takes a lot of time, trouble and money. Like I said, Interdynamics gauges can be bought for $40. A Mastercool flushing kit costs $43 from www.ackits.com The Airsept kit costs $87 from www.ontool.com Volvo conversion kit one is $50 (receiver alone is $30) and conversion kit two is $30 from www.swedishengineering.com I bought from Phillip in Marietta.
