hard starting 745 700

I have a hard start problem with my 88 745 NA B230. When the engine is dead cold, it starts well after one or two revolutions. BUT if the engine is warm at all, it will take more cranking than I like for it to start....Procedure when warm: crank three-five revs, release key, listen to pumps run to stop then crank five-six revs and experience start up (sometimes lately with rough running for 2-5 seconds, but not usually). When the engine is very warm, it also starts right up. I think I have fuel pressure problems, but don't know. Is it the fpr? The quick start up after sitting overnight suggests to me that the check valve on the fuel pump is holding. Could it be a faulty temp sensor? The hall sensor is new. The plugs had a whitish color deposit on them last time out (last week)--running lean? Any help here would as always be greatly appreciated...incidently, I love this forum. Thanks.
