Idiot light that says SERVICE 1998

I own a 1998 C-70 Coupe, and need to find out how to delete the SERVICE
idiot light on the dash. Manual says it comes on periodically, but my mechanic (not Volvo dealer) either won't or can't turn it off. So, how do I turn the thing off? Any help will be appreciated. quibi@msn.com Thanks.
