Hi all,
My 1991 940GLE is acting up again. Probably it realises that its owner has not visited this site for a long time. Anyway the problem with the car is that out of the blue the car won't start. Not even a crank of the engine. The idiot lights would glow and when I turn the key to start nothing happens (except the click sound of the shiftlock switch). The lights would dim a little bit but no cranking sound. So far it has done this to me twice and these two occasion is separated by three weeks.
However, the strange thing about these two incidents is that it won't start after the car had been driven and stopped and when restart was attempted. No problem when I start the car early morning or when I am about to leave the office in the evening. My techno wacky macho mechanic says its the starter solanoid. He says the car needed an extra relay for starter since it is not restarting when the car is hot but eventually starts when the car cools down a bit. hmmmmmm (interesting thought).
But I am not convinced considering I have helped my friend to sue this guy (and won) for negligence on some repair work for 850. I have checked the battery voltage. Luckly I am employed by a battery manufacturer. The technician did some tests with his equipments. The reading says the battery is fine considering its only less than two years old but the altenator is not so good (under full load) but nothing life threatening (like the car won't start).
Any good samaritans out there who can confirm or contradict my wacky mechanic? If it comes down to starter solanoid, how can I fix it on my own? Where is the location of this solanoid?
Thanks for your inputs. Much appreciated.
