FUEL PRESSURE 700 1985

'85 740 won't sustain running after start. I finally got a fuel pressure gauge fitted and with the pumps operating and engine dead, I get 41 psi. Haynes says it ought to be 36 for non-turbo engines. Is this pressure too high to cause this? When I cut the pumps, the pressure settles back to 35, so I am also thinking it might be a clogged return line althugh I can't figure out what could cause that. It happened very quickly when it stopped.
I'd appreciate any words of wisdom before forking out for a new FPR.
