Almost didnt make it home, please help diagnos problem!! 700 1989

As I read alot of the posts, I have been learning a little about this car, since this is my first Volvo.I hope someone has an answer to help me, so here we go. On about a 200 mi trip, the first half went pretty well, other than what seems to be large fuel consumption.(owners manual 1989 740 gl says about 15 gallon tank)Filled up the car, got to destination(about 102 mi)had to refill tank, took about 12.5 gals. Now knowing the car has no leaks, it just seemed strange to me until the problem started....Out of the blue I was driving along about 65 mph(2300rpm)the car started losing power and breaking up a little bit. The road I was traveling along was about 70 mi straight with no traffic signals. The problem seemed to come and go untill I came to the first traffic signal about 27 mi from my house. When I came to a stop, the idle dropped down to about 350rpms, the car started running very rough then stalled. The car stsrted right backup, but when I went to leave the light,I had to depress the gas pedal to the floor. At first there was a couple of bucks like it wanted to gothen after about thirty seconds it just seem to get a second life and take off until the next traffic light in which yhe problem would repeat itself for the next 27 mi. When the car finally would get up enough rpms to take off the black cloud of smoke was pretty decent in size.Well thats my story, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
