Aargh!!

Has anyone figured out a way to prevent the tailgate harnesses from self destructing??

Mine has self-destructed again, and I can't stand the thought of buying another one only to have it meet the same fate. Is there a DIY method of repairing the damage that's present inside the hinge assemblies?? Or, if I do need to buy a new harness, is there some way of improving its life expectancy?? My last two have lasted less than four years each.
