My 1983 240 started acting weird over the weekend. I felt the car almost stall coming to a light, then noticed an odd odor. It was a sulfur odor that was similar to an episode late last year whereupon I changed the Air Mass Meter.
After a day of driving the car like this, I noticed some symptoms. It has a very low idle, as though it is just sputtering to life. This idle problem occurs after a) about a minute after starting the car or b) about 20 seconds after having my foot on the accelerator (coming to a stop, etc.).
The car now has horrible gas mileage (roughly 18 MPG)-- about the same as when the old AMM conked out.
Removing the cable from the AMM makes the idle surge up and down, but the car now accelerates a lot better.
Could it be that I have a bad AMM? I have also never changed the 02 sensor in 145,000 miles of having this car, so this may be a possibility.
