Auto transmission not shifting smoothely 700 1991

The auto transmission in my 740 1991 does not shift smoothly. There is a 'thud' between shifts. I have just acquired the car and have no maintenance history. The color of the fluid is reddish brown. Would appreciate advice on what I can do to smooth out the shift. Thanks. Morton Sherry
