strange noise during idle & mystery speaker 700 1989

First posting, two questions re: my '89 745GL:

1. At idle (RPMs below 1000) I notice a chittering/squeaking noise from the engine bay, somewhere near the right front wheel well (haven't been able to pinpoint it). I'm guessing something is loose & vibrating, but have no idea what. Drivetrain is the std. B230F/AW70L, with 127,000 miles.

2. While installing a new CD player I discovered a small black speaker sitting under my steering wheel. It wasn't attached to anything except a wire running into the center console (couldn't trace it past there). It was just resting on the inside of the trim plate, and after I'd put everything back together it slid down and landed behind my brake pedal. Since it never made any noise and I couldn't find a place to attach it, I ended up cutting it off and taping the ends of the wires so it wouldn't end up rolling around and blocking the pedals. I have no idea what it does, but haven't noticed any problems since I took it out! Any guesses? Many thanks, I'm enjoying this board already.
