WAHT HAPPEN,TAILGAIT SHOCKS NOT HOLDING UP ??????????

What happen my tailgait was ok up to yesterday morning ,weather was warm then we got really cold spell and the shocks stopped working . This might not be the problem but till hen all was ok any ideas .
Do I have to replace shocks, or am is there a way of fixing if broken
