1983 low or high comp? 200

I'm trying to figure out which engine my 1983 240 DL, manual tranny car has. The literature that I've read states that about halfway through the 83 production run, the compression ratio of the manual tranny cars was dropped from 10.x to 9.x. Strangely enough, the high compression manual tranny cars produced in the beginning of this year have less horsepower than the lower compression cars! So my questions are thus:

How can I tell which engine my car has? Does anybody know the production date cutoff? Also, what other differences in engines were there? If compression is going down and the engine is gaining 10hp, then surely, there must be other engine changes. Did the earlier B23Fs have a weaker cam? Poorly designed exhaust? Or what? Any ideas?

Thanks.
