Rear main seals

How much of a p.i.t.a is it to change the rear main seal on a 700 series? The vague haynes description makes it look like a horror. I am losing a good amount of oil around where the tranny connects to the engine and would like to switch over to synthetic oil soon but not while I have any leaks.
