There are some Volvo fanatics out there who will say, "As long as the body is straight, you can fix anything on these cars" and they will literally do just that. Perhaps they have misinterpreted "Volvo: for life" to mean that they should keep their bricks for life? :-)
But, every car seems to have a limited life span/service life. What is the average service life of the 200 series? In other words, at what point does the car become too unreliable/costly to run for the average person?
From my limited personal experience, I'd say that it's at about 200k miles. My '86 245 ran relatively trouble-free (air mass meter at 80k, rack at 150k, radiator at 180k) until 200,000 and then started to rapidly deteriorate. All of the big ticket items (rear bushings, wire harness, blower motor, clutch, hall sensor) went after 200k. And this car has been well maintained, never neglected or abused.
Does this jibe with other 240 owners' experiences? Has anyone hit 300k without an engine/tranny overhaul?
