What octane to use for non-turbo 700 1990

I am a recent 740 wagon buyer(non-turbo). I have been using 89 octane, but I met someone that has been using 87 octane since his car was new with no problems. What is best? I never did ask the previous owner what he had been using. Thanks in advance.
