Timing Belt/Water Pump change 700 1986

Well, I went to the mechanic I usually go to so I could find out how much it would cost to replace the timing belt and the water pump. (The water pump seems to work fine but there is a slight coolant leak from where it mates with the head.) The cost would be $440!

How hard are these jobs? I have done a lot of stuff on my car, like take out the cam to replace the rubber absorbers under the tappets, fix the lumbar support in my seat, adjust the valve clearances, etc. Generally I can do all the #2 and some of the #3 stuff in the IPD catalogue.

What special tools would I need, and how much time? Where could I screw up and break something? I know there are instructions for these jobs in the FAQ, but I wanted to get a more subjective response.

Also, what temp thermostat should I use on my NA B230? They are available at 19? and 18? degrees and I don't know which one is appropriate.

Thanks a lot for your feedback.

Darius
