Flame trap (not the arrester) probs, and removal 200 1992

My car is a na 92 240 and I have leaking seals and now a leaking oil cap. I was told early on that I needed to replace the seal around the oil cap. There is pressure in the valve cover. I am now told be several techs that I should replace the flame trap (the box located on the left side of the block under all the intake crap etc). How do I test this before going to the trouble to replace. The car has 161,000 and has never had the flame trap replaced, just the plastic arrester. Brentwood says that it is a common part to replace. Do I have to remove the complete intake or just move all the hoses and wiring harnesses. I'm not looking forward to this. I can't even see the mounting bolts. Haynes is useless for this. Thanks.
