Hey there,
I suspect that my alternator on my '82 242ti is not grounded causing the car to run off the battery and eventually die...Prior to recently replacing the wiring harness all the warning lights came on for a period and the car died as it was running off the battery, replacement of the harness didn't remedy this.
I also replaced the brush/regulator unit, they're together right? This didn't work. I did take my alternator off and to a volvo shop for the guy to look at, he suggested that I replace the brushes, which I did. I also asked him what the connections on the back were about....
1. the white round with black wings is the brush\regulator assembly
2. there is a spade connection that connects to the smaller red wire from the new harness
3. A lug connection that accepts the larger red cable from the new wiring harness, that's all that comes from the harness to the alternator
4. there is also a small black inch square unit with a black wire (duh this may be a ground), but it was described to me by the volvo shop guy as a noise supressor) something I hadn't heard of, is he right, what is a noise suppressor anyway.
Further more if this "noise supressor" unit is not the ground then must I create a new one, where does it connect to? What guage wire should I use.
Thanks for the help friends, Josh Lasserre
