rear axle swap 140-160 1974

I was talking to this Volvo guy and he thinks changing my 74 164 3.31:1 rear axle to a 144 or ford 4:10 ratio will make it go better. I was wondering if made much of a difference and if I were to change to Bw35 - a m41 would i have to change the rear axle again? Is it worth the money or should i do something different like work on the head or camshaft or something like that.
