Oil separator out - new question? 200 1992

Just got the plastic oil separater box off the block with much cursing and I can blow through it both ways. Is it supposed to be blocked by a valve. I know the diagram shows only a gallery for gases to flow through and drop moisture out and back into the case.It's light as a feather and doesn't sound like anything is clogged. Is there a valve in the block which might be stuck closed?I can see a rod of some sort in the rear hole of the block.? I'm thinking I just got filthy for nothing and now my wife is pissed.
