I have a 97 960 with 70K miles. Car is fully maintained and in perfect shape.
Occasionally when going over bumps, I hear a sharp 'clunk" or "bang" type of noise which seems to eminate from the right rear of the car. I cannot tell if it is a trunk part, trunkliner, something in the wheel well, the rear shock, etc.
I have checked the car and nothing appears loose either in the rear seats, trunk, or right wheel well. It only happens under certain conditions i.e. generally when the slope of the road or hole or whatever is gradually up, then bottoms out quickly. For example, a regular pothole does not generate the noise but sometimes a manhole cover with slight depressions in the concrete will. It's pretty strange and annoying. This happens a few times a week, but not always. Ideas I checked were the trunk liner and also the tool kit in the trunk, but it could be the suspension? The front and rear shocks were replaced within the last 10k miles, so I am wondering if something could be loose. Searching for any ideas no matter how inane.
