I have a 1982 GLT (2.3,non turbo).
occasionally after running a short time,engine only warm, i shut the car off,
and it won't restart untill I let it cool down for several hours.
It doesn't get a spark from the coil lead to ground when I crank over the engine.As a quick fix(after re wiring the engine harness,changing the coil,ensuring the fuel pump is working,hot wiring the ignition circuit,checking for vacuum leaks,changing spark plugs,cleaning the injectors and replacing the o-rings) I've tried removing the distributor cap and rotor and
dust shield and dumping cold water in the distributor in an attempt to cool down the magnetic pick-up coil,and lo and behold the engine starts.
So, my question is : does any one know what the resistance of the pickup
coil should be? I've checked mine , engine warm , and it was in the order of
4.5 K ohm , and cold around 1.7 K ohm.Now I'm unsure if in fact the hot reading is true as the resistance drops as I read it.(dist primary disconnected from Ignition module).As I have been using a digital meter,
which seems to have a lag time to stabilize the reading.

so any help regarding dist. pickup coil values would be appreciated,
or any further suggestions? Thanks for help in advance......Larry
