200 series fuel pump relays(how do they work?) 200

Does anybody out there know how the circa 1982 fuel pump realys work?
As far as I can tell, the pressure regulator is a mechanical device,
and the contacts only serve to control the auxillary air valve.
So how does the relay know how to shut the pump of at say idle,
when the engine doesn't need as much fuel volume?
By measuring current draw, the relay could tell when the regulator dumps the excess(pump at full current draw, working against regulator pressure spring).
But when the pressure falls, and more volume is needed for the engine, what tells the relay to restart the pump?
Maybe I'm missing something in the wiring diagram I have(Haynes).
Then again maybe I'm missing something period.
thanks for any and all replys.......Larry
