Idle Air Control Valve 700 1988

I am hopeful someone can help me without guessing. I have a 1988 Volvo 740 GLE, 2.3 4cly,auto trans,non-turbo. My idle air control valve is worn out and I have already took it apart and cleaned it ( comintator, contact points & light luberication ). My question is when I install the replacement IACV does it have to be in a certain position before I plug it in ? I also need to know is it nessesary to disconect the battery negitive and positive cables to reset the computers back to their default ( new information input from all the other sensors and electrical componants because I have replaced the IACV with a new one )? I do not want to go ahead without knowing more, so I don't end up with a result that would be nothing more than the IACV hunting for it place within the electrical family it co-exists with. Any factual information you can provide I will be very thankful for. Thank you for your time trying to help me out. Dan Metz.
