Getting car checked by new mechanic...any advice? 200 1984

I have posted recently about my oil pressure gauge dropping to zero for a couple of seconds then returning to normal, usually when I slow to stop and then when I start again.

I am having the car looked at by a mechanic tomorrow (claims to be a volvo specialist) and I was wondering if any of you have any pearls of wisdom when it comes to figuring out whether a mechanic's any good. (or for that matter, any garage suggestions in Toronto)

The car is a 1984 245GLTi and he quoted an hour's labour to check the oil pressure and give the car a general lookover. Sounds reasonable enough to me?

I guess I am wondering what to expect if he says I need a new oil pump and quotes me a price. What is reasonable for parts & labour? I'm afraid to say that I'm in the early stages of learning about this car and will basically be at his mercy.

Any suggestions / tips / advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Märt
