odometer died 200 1989

Hi maybe some one can help me. I reciently picked up a 89' 240 dl wagon.
When I bought it the odometer decided to stop at 166,714 miles. The speedometer works fine. Any Ideas on that. the speedo shop wants 80-130 to fix it. I'm rather mechanical and can repair alot. is it worth paying the guy?
