Hydraulic clutch: why full throw before release? 1990 745GLE 700 1990

On my 1990 745GLE, I have to push my clutch pedal almost to the floor to disengage the clutch. It's the hydraulic variety. I bought the car last summer; it was like it then; it is like it now. It has been suggested that it was time to change my clutch but I don't follow the logic. If the clutch was worn thin, it should disengage sooner, not later, right? The hydraulic system is self adjusting so it should compensate and I should be back at a normal disengagement. So, wouldn't it be more likely to be a slave cylinder leakage problem? There are no external leaks but there could be internal leaks. The system is firm and will hold the pressure on the clutch if I hold the pedal in for an extended period. I just don't see how a worn clutch would disengage late. Any clues?

Bill
