The console hand brake that runs to the rear wheel brake shoes does not seem to have a FAQ entry so here is the problem. Everything from the brake cables from the equalizer to the shoes had to be replaced as they rusted and stuck causing brake drag and gas guzzling. The equalizer bracket at the end of the cable also had corroded but was easily cleaned and works free even inside the boot. The Volvo parts book shows two equalizer attachment configurations, a bar with two screws and a bracket with a hinged rod (this 780 has that), that connect the equalizer to the frame. They also show an adjuster between the shoes, however, this 780 has an "H" shaped bar. Now the equalizer does not release enough to connect, and the console brake handle wants to pop up the first notch, not sit down, when it is not connected to the cables. It seems that the cable is sticking yet it to moves in and out about two inches at the equalizer but soes not release enough to connect the eualizer to both cables. Any experience and solutions with this problem will be quite welcome.
