Is a 74' and a 72' ignition cylinder the same? 144s. 140-160

Hello.
As some of you remember, this cylinder, I got it used, now it's a pain to turn the key. (Also cracked now.) And it's actually worst than the old on. The shop now has one for a 74'... (the newer dash one.) And I wonder if it would fit, or perhaps I can use the internals of the 74' one and patch my old 72' one? Has anyone every tried this? Or can I just bolt the 74' unit up... (that'd be really really nice... )
Thanks everyone...
