1993 volvo 940 wagon non turbo, O/D 900 1993

After 30 minutes of driving doing around 70mph, the transmission drops out of over drive and into 3rd gear just by stepping on the gas to go a little faster. This only happens after 30 mins of driving when the engine and tranny are hot. When cold it works fine. In order for it to stop dropping out of the overdrive, I have to shut the car off and wait about 15 minutes for it to cool down. If I don't, it keeps jumping in and out of OD. Does anyone have a clue as to what is causing this?
