1989 240dl complete loss of power 200 1989

hi....i'm new to this forum....but not new to volvos.
one problem: my car broke down yesterday. everything cut out...engine, radio, blower...all power gone. i had the same problem in january...result was bad alternator. i had that replaced (and battery was checked to make sure that was accepting a charge). am i looking at the same pronblem again? or could the wiring just be bad/loose. last time it happened i was able to let the car sit for approx 15 min and start it again. but it maybe made it 2 blocks before cutting out again. so yesterday i tried waiting and turning it on again, but this time i did get power after waiting...but the engine would not turn over. and when i tried starting again immediately after...dead car. i always check on the fuses...no prob there. one other thing i noticed about 15-20 min earlier my check engine light flicker a few times (and i was afraid i was going to lose power or something) when the car hit a bump in the road. please tell me something could have been disconnected or i'd need a new battery...not the alternator again.

thanks in advance for your suggestions....
maggie
