Rough idle, poor gas mileage 700 1992

My '92 740 (B230) has been reliable for 155K miles. These problems started after the dealer replaced the catalytic convertor. He ran the codes which suggested mass airflow sensor fuel trim faults. I put in a rebuilt unit, ran fine for a few days, then the problems returned during a longer drive. Now dark smoke in exhaust in addition to the rough start/idle and gas mileage less than half of what it should be. Car stalls out if I unplug the unit. Any suggestions?
