Transmission problems 700 1989

Hey,

I've got an 89' 740 GL. Just recently, my car has failed to shift into 4th gear. This has come and gone twice and is back again for who knows how long. At around 50 mph, it is going just under 3000 rpm's. I don't want to run it much faster than this for fear of screwing more things up. Any ideas on what is wrong? Maybe something to do with the governer? Any advice or ideas would be appreciated.
