What to check following coolant loss and mild overheating 900

I am interested in what to look for / undertake as a preventative measure following coolant loss and "mild" (?) overheating.

Coolant loss from heater control valve / hose.
Picked up the rapidly rising guage (saw it at about 3/4, normally 1/2), pulled over immmediately and stopped.

Slowed to idle and turned off (it is a turbo).
The guage was almost to the red at this point.

As I had some coolant, I filled it up - took 5 litres, within about 2-3 min.

At the point I noticed I had just overtaken at full throttle to 70mph, and power seemed OK. Driving now it seems slightly down on power, though this might be paranoia. Boost guage seems to be read higher at cruise, though acceleration still seems strong. The car has 160,000 km, mobil 1 and just due a major service.

Are there any specific things to look for, or to do save the servicing, as a preventative measure or to guage the damage?

Should the focus be head / valves, turbo?

Anyone been through this and came out without a huge bill?

Paul
