Gear shift boot 200 1984

I've just got a new shift boot to replace the decayed one on my manual 240.

When I got the car several years back, the gear shift knob would continually pop off and the OD wires were a pain to reattach. Finally, we glued it in place and I would rather leave it there now.

Is it possible to pop the rubber boots over the knob, perhaps with the help of a little soap as a lubricant?
