synthetic vs. mineral oil 900

I need an education! On my 92-960 (and other cars I had) the synthetic "looks" just as dirty as the mineral oil at 5000-6000 km and seems to be in need of a change.

QUESTIONS: Has anyone else observed this? Should I change the synthetic oil when it "looks" dirty? I am thinking of switching back mineral because of the cost.
