240 altenator B+ to battery wiring?

Hello,

What is the reason that the altenator B+ goes to the starter then the battery, instead of directly to the battery. My sons car is dropping about 3/4 volts through the wiring. Im thinking about bypassing the starter and run the wire straight to the battery. Any reason why I shouldnt?
